Your True Identity
God has something to say about your identity...it's not a mystery!
Identity is the topic of discussion across America today. Politicians play identity politics. There is gender identity confusion. Others are calling for racial identity or tribal identity...identity statements seem to be everywhere! But, what does the Bible say about identity? First, it is clear that each man, woman, boy or girl is created in the image of God! We all bear the handiwork of the Lord! Psalm 139 tells us that we are formed and known by the Lord in our mother's womb. Yes, God has a say in the matter!
Even those who reject God have in their very nature - the image of the Creator. We may have marred that image through our sin, but His stamp of wonder and marvelous beauty is there nonetheless. When we look around us we see the creative splendor of our God. His fingerprints are all over creation. So much so that the Bible tells us that we have no excuse for not acknowledging Him as our Creator (Romans 1).
Yet, there is so much more. Genesis tells us that "male and female He created them." God created humankind with purpose and potential. God's plan was to fill the earth with His prized creation...human families. He told them be "be fruitful and multiply." Adam and Even started the first family. Each subsequent family grew from that particular family tree. Families build neighborhoods and societies. Families build culture, communication, character and more.
Because God values human life (His prize creation) and hates sin...He provided a way for our sin to be forgiven and a new identity to be forged. Jesus Christ is The Way that God provided. He died a sinless death, was buried and rose again so that whoever calls on Him might be saved or rescued. In other words, God formed us, sin deformed us and Christ transforms us.
The Apostle Paul's letter to the Ephesian church served as a reminder to these early believers (who had been transformed by Christ) that they can know their true identity. He reminded them (and us, today) that they were "blessed...chosen...predestined...redeemed...promised an inheritance...sealed by the Holy Spirit" (Eph. 1:1-14). These profound and encouraging words were helpful to the first century church during times of persecution and growth. Today, these words should be helpful for every believer in Christ. We need to be reminded of our true identity. Especially, when there is so much confusion concerning identity in our culture.
Remember this, my friend...God's view always matters!. His Word on personal problems, politics, persecution and cultural perversion is relevant! Why would we choose to listen to everyone other than God concerning the issues we face? God is our Creator and His Owner's Manual, the Bible, is sufficient in providing instruction on how to live.
Indeed, God has a word on your identity! So, read the Scriptures to discover the rich truths concerning your identity and so much more. His plan is perfect. His purposes are true. His provision is sufficient. His promises are comforting. Discover who you are in Him. If you are separated from Him due to your sin...call on Him, today. His forgiveness is freeing and fulfilling. Your new identity in Him will be life-transforming...guaranteed!
